an improved faster region-based convolutional neural network (r-cnn) [same object retrieval (sor) faster r-cnn] is proposed to retrieve the same object in different scenes with few training samples. by concatenating the feature maps of shallow and deep convolutional layers, the ability of regions of interest (roi) pooling to extract more detailed features is improved. in the training process, a pretrained cnn model is fine-tuned using a query image data set, so that the confidence score can identify an object proposal to the object level rather than the classification level. in the query process, we first select the ten images for which the object proposals have the closest confidence scores to the query object proposal. then, the image for which the detected object proposal has the minimum cosine distance to the query object proposal is considered as the query result. the proposed sor faster r-cnn is applied to our coke cans data set and three public image data sets, i.e., oxford buildings 5k, paris buildings 6k, and ins 13. the experimental results confirm that sor faster r-cnn has better identification performance than fine-tuned faster r-cnn. moreover, sor faster r-cnn achieves much higher accuracy for detecting low-resolution images than the fine-tuned faster r-cnn on the coke cans (0.094 map higher), oxford buildings (0.043 map higher), paris buildings (0.078 map higher), and ins 13 (0.013 map higher) data sets.

we generalize the newton-based extremum seeking algorithm, which, through measurements of an unknown map, maximizes the map's higher derivatives. specifically, we propose a method for choosing the demodulation signals of a sinusoidally perturbed estimate, such that the extremum seeking algorithm maximizes the n th derivative only through measurements of the map. the newton-based extremum seeking approach removes the dependence of the average convergence rate on the unknown hessian of the higher derivative. this dependence is present in standard gradient-based extremum seeking while the average convergence rate of our parameter estimates is user-assignable. our design stems from the existing multivariable newton-based extremum seeking algorithm where a differential riccati equation estimates the inverse hessian of the function to be maximized. algebraically computing a direct estimate of the inverse hessian is susceptible to singularity, where-as employing the riccati filter removes that potential. we prove local stability of the algorithm for general nonlinear maps via averaging theory.

the ``het echo mapping project'' is a new research program that is using the echo mapping technique to probe supermassive black holes and their environments in agn. its primary goals are to: (1) map the size, geometry, and the flow of the blr gas; (2) make direct dynamical estimates of the mass of the black hole using the measured geometry and kinematics of the blr; (3) map higher luminosity agn (at redshifts z ~2.3--2.8), probing accretion onto black holes that are 10--100 times more massive than could previously be studied; (4) measure the temporal evolution of blr structure. the project relies on two key elements: (1) we are using the new, queue--scheduled, 9--m ``het'' telescope to obtain superb data. previous projects were limited by the noisy and non--uniform data produced by the small telescopes (1--2.5 m) that were used. (2) we will carry out full 2--dimensional (velocity--resolved) echo mapping. most previous attempts have only been able to produce 1--d maps. details and initial results from the project will be presented. this project is supported in part by the nsf.
